Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having excellent wear resistance by subjecting the surface of a magnetic recording layer to plasma nitriding in a gas contg. N and H to deposit a protective CrN layer on the surface of the magnetic recording layer. CONSTITUTION:After the magnetic recording layer 8 consisting of a thin ferromagnetic metallic film contg. Cr is formed on a nonmagnetic substrate 1, the surface of this magnetic recording layer 8 is subjected to the plasma nitriding in the gas contg. N and H to deposit the protective Cr-N layer 9 on the surface of the magnetic recording layer 8. The boundary between the Cr-N layer and the magnetic recording layer is, therefore, no longer distinct and the so-called boundary face is eliminated. The fracture from the boundary face is thus obviated. The magnetic recording medium having the excellent wear resistance is thereby obtd.
