Abstract

CONSTITUTION:An underlying layer 2 is formed on one main surface of a disk- shaped nonmagnetic substrate 1 and a thin magnetic film 3 is formed on the underlying layer 2. The protective film 4 consisting of tungsten carbide is formed on this thin magnetic film 3 by a sputtering method using a target consisting of the tungsten carbide, by which a magnetic recording medium 5 is produced. The content of the tungsten in this protective film 4 is specified to 5-20atom.%. The good durability to the magnetic head consisting of a material having 1,900 Vickers hardness is thereby obtd.
