Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the wear, peeling etc., of the vapor-deposited layer of a recording medium by setting the growth direction of the rhomic crystal columns of the uppermost layer of the ferromagnetic slanting-incident vapor-deposited layer of the magnetic recording medium and the relative motion direction of a magnetic head at an acute angle.
CONSTITUTION: A magnetic recording medium 1 consists of a base 2 of a nonmagnetic material and a recording layer 3 formed on the base 2 by using a ferromagnetic material. The recording layer 3 is made of a layer of crystal columns 4 of a ferromagnetic material with a growth direction A slanting to the surface of the base 2. A magnetic head 5 for magnetic recording is arranged over the recording medium 1, and this magnetic head 5 records and reproduces information on and from the recording medium 1 at an acute angle α to the growth direction of crystal columns 4, i.e. in a forward direction. In this method, the crystal columns are pressed by the magnetic head to slant further, thereby reducing the wear, peeling, etc., of the vapor-deposited layer.
