Abstract
PURPOSE:To provide a metallic thin film type magnetic recording medium having an amorphous and smooth underlying metallic layer and having overall superior performances by forming the underlying metallic layer consisting of a non-magnetic Ni-base alloy contg. a specific amt. of P and a magnetic metallic layer successively on a base material. CONSTITUTION:A conductive layer 2 consisting of a non-magnetic metal such as copper is formed on a base material 1 consisting of polyester, polyamide, etc. by an electroless plating method, and an underlying metallic layer 3 consisting of a nonmagnetic Ni-base alloy contg. 1-15wt% P is formed thereon by an electroplating method using a plating bath contg. bivalent nickel ions and hypophosphite ions. Thence, a magnetic metallic layer 4 consisting of a thin film of a magnetic alloy such as Ni-Co-P alloy or Co-P alloy, and a protecting layer 5 consisting of a nonmagnetic metallic material such as nickel alloy are formed successively thereon by an electroplating method, an electroless plating method or the like, whereby the intended metallic thin film type magnetic recording medium is obtained.
