Abstract

1,244,681. Magnetic recording media. BURROUGHS CORP. 27 March, 1969 [29 Jan., 1969], No. 16230/69. Addition to 1,244,503. Heading H1H. [Also in Division C7] A ferromagnetic coating (e.g. of Co-P or Co-Ni-P) is deposited solely by electrolysis on an electrically conductive carrier by the method of the parent Specification modified by providing as the source of phosphorus both hypophosphite and phosphite ions and controlling the hypophosphite ions in the range up to 4 g./1. and the phosphite ions in the range up to 12 g./1. by determining and adjusting their concentrations to obtain a predetermined coercivity in the ferromagnetic coating. The hypophosphite and phosphite ions may be derived from H 3 PO 2 and H 3 PO 3 or their respective Na, K, Ca or NH 4 salts. Other differences from the parent Specification are: the pH can be maintained by the addition of nickel carbonate, K 2 CO 3 , Na 2 CO 3 or H 2 SO 4 . The bath may be agitated adjacent the surface being plated. The coatings deposited may have thicknesses of 5 to 500 millionths of an inch. A recording density of 3000 binary bits per inch can be achieved on films produced by the method.
