Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled crucible inert even in case active metals are used as the substances to be melted, by forming at least the contact surface with the substances to be melted using yttrium oxide containing specified amount of hafnium oxide. CONSTITUTION:The objective crucible is such that at least the contact surface with the substances to be melted is formed by yttrium oxide containing <=30mol.% of hafnium oxide. This crucible can be produced by the following (a) or (b) process: (a) <=30mol.% of hafnium oxide powder and >=70mol.% of yttrium oxide powder are mixed, being formed into a crucible shape followed by sintering or (b) a spray layer consisting of yttrium oxide containing <=30mol.% of hafnium oxide is formed on at least the contact surface, with the substances to be melted, of a refractory structure.
