Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material, etc., for synthesizing medicine advantageously on an industrial scale, by cultivating a microorganism belonging to the genus Rhodococcus and capable of assimilating (R,S)-1,3-butanediol in a medium containing the above-mentioned compound and collecting the resultant product from the cultivated substance. CONSTITUTION:A microorganism [e.g. Rhodococcus erythropolis 13-917 strain (FERM P-9056)] belonging to the genus Rhodococcus and having ability capable of assimilating (R,S)-1,3-butanediol is cultivated in a culture medium containing (R,S)-1,3-butanediol to accumulate an optically active (R)-(-)-beta-hydroxylactic acid in the medium and optically active (R)-(-)-beta-hydroxylactic acid is collected from the cultivated substance to provide the aimed compound.
