PURPOSE:To suppress fluctuation of engine torque during searching interval by varying the ignition timing in the direction matching with varying direction of air-fuel ratio when the air-fuel ratio of mixture gas is varied, thereby searching an optimal ignition timing and shortening the searching time. CONSTITUTION:First means A for varying the ignition timing and searching a first optimal ignition timing for producing the maximum engine torque when the air-fuel ratio of mixture gas fed into the combustion chamber of an engine is maintained at a first level is provided. Means B for varying the air-fuel ratio to a second value upon finish of searching through the means A is also provided.
