Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve starting properties of an internal combustion engine and to prevent discharge of a noxious component, by a method wherein, when the starting condition of an internal combustion engine is changed along with a change in an external condition, a compression ratio available during the starting of the internal combustion engine is controlled to a proper value according to the change. CONSTITUTION:An internal combustion engine 1 is provided with a mechanism 2 varying a compression ratio according to the operation condition thereof. In this case, a means 3 to detect the starting time of the internal combustion engine 1 is provided. A means 4 to detect the state of the internal combustion engine 1 available during the starting based on a factor related to the startability of the internal combustion engine 1 is provided. A means 5 to set an optimum compression ratio so that the startability of the internal combustion engine 1 is improved according to the state of the internal combustion engine 1 detected by the means 4 is provided. This constitution controls a compression ratio available during the starting of the internal combustion engine 1 to a proper value according to the change in starting condition of the internal combustion engine 1 when the change occurs along with a change in an external condition, resulting in improvement of startability.
