Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent generation of knocking sounds by retarding the ignition timing of the ignition plug, which is mounted in a main chamber, from that of the ignition plug which is mounted in an auxiliary chamber. CONSTITUTION:A main chamber 1 is equipped with an ignition plug 6, which is arranged apart from the injection port 3 of an auxiliary chamber 2, and the ignition timing of the plug 6 of the main chamber 1 is retarded less than 10 degrees in terms of a crank angle than that of the ignition plug 4 of the auxiliary chamber 2. Thus, under the condition (of A) other than the high load condition having no fear if spontaneous ignition, the ignition is accomplished by a torch flame, and then the plug 6 generates a spark which has no relationship with the ignition. Under the condition (of B) of high load having a fear of the spontaneous ignition, the ignition is effected by the plug 6. Under the latter conditioh, there is a fear of the spontaneous ignition prior to the ignition with the torch flame so that the knocking noises can be prevented in advance with the ignition by the plug 6.
