Abstract

A high voltage is applied between a discharge electrode 3 set in the inside of the vessel and a discharge electrode 4 set in the outside of the vessel to generate a corona discharge between the external electrode 4 and part of the external surface of the vessel 1. When the vessel 1 is cylindrical, the electrode 3 in the inside of the vessel 1 is set along the central axis of the cylinder, and the counter electrode 4 is set concentrically around this central axis. This arrangement can establish a uniform electric field between the electrodes if the thickness of the wall of the vessel is uniform throughout it, so that part 6 of the external surface of the vessel 1 can be uniformly modified.
