Abstract
PURPOSE:To lower effectively a cell voltage, by contacting closely porous cathodes with a specified thickness and porous anodes with a specified thickness to an ion-exchange membrane, and deactivating at least one of the electrode surfaces in close contact with the ion-exchange membrane. CONSTITUTION:The anodes 2 ad the cathodes 3 are made in close contact with the ion-exchange membrane 1, and all of the surfaces of the anodes 2 including the surfaces in close contact with the membrane 1 are made active to electrode reaction. The surface of each of the cathodes 3 that is in close contact with the membrane 1 is made inactive to electrode reaction, and the remaining surfaces of the cathodes 3 are made to have a catalytic action. The apparent thickness of the electrodes 2, 3 used is up to 1mm., and they are arranged in zigzag manner. Accordingly, the centralization of the electric current distribution would occur less in the anodes 2, and the cathodes 3, and particularly stagnation of fine babbles evolved at the cathodes can be significantly reduced.
