Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a sharp image having a high contrast by forming 1st and 2nd electrodes on an insulating substrate and coating the 1st and 2nd electrodes as well as the insulating substrate with a ferroelectric layer. CONSTITUTION:The 1st electrode 13 consisting of Cr and the 2nd electrode 15 consisting of ITO are provided on the insulating substrate 12 consisting of a glass substrate and the ferroelectric layer 14 consisting of non-single crystalline TiBaO3 is provided on the 1st electrode 13 and the 2nd electrode 15. Since the 1st and 2nd electrodes 13, 15 are not superposed in a vertical direction if device is made into such construction, the short-circuit between the two electrodes by a defect such as pinhole of the ferroelectric layer 14 is obviated. The ferroelectric layer 14 is formed after the 1st and 2nd electrodes 13, 15 are formed and, therefore, the ferroelectric layer 14 is not damaged at all after the formation. The annihilation of the image information by the leak current of the liquid crystal itself is thereby obviated and the sharp image having the high contrast is obtd.
