Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a sharp image having a high contrast by holding the electric field impressed to a liquid crystal not by the time constant of the liquid crystal itself but by the spontaneous polarization of a ferroelectric layer. CONSTITUTION:A 1st electrode 13 consisting of Cr is provided on a glass substrate 12 and the ferroelectric layer 14 consisting of non-single crystal TiBaO3 is provided on the glass substrate 12 and the 1st electrode 13. A 2nd electrode 15 consisting of ITO is provided on the 1st electrode 13 and the ferroelectric layer 14. Since the liquid crystal is driven by the spontaneous polarization possessed by the ferroelectric material 14, the annihilation of picture element information by the leak current of the liquid crystal itself is obviated. The sharp image having the high contrast is thereby obtd.
