Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a tool steel with considerably enhanced machinability and improved impact resistance by combinedly adding S as a free cutting component and a rare earth element.
CONSTITUTION: This tool steel consists of 0.2W2.5% C, 0.1W2.0% Si, 0.4W3.0% Mn, 1.0W20.0% Cr, 0.1W3.0% Mo, 0.01W0.3% N, 0.04W0.4% S, 0.005W0.60% in total of ≥1 kind of rare earth element and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. The rare earth element is La, Ce, Nd, Sc, Y, Sm or the like. S and the rare earth element are important as components providing machinability, and it is required to add both the elements in combination with each other. The rare earth element combines with S easily and disperses as fine spheroidal sulfide with a high m.p., and the sulfide is drawn in the form of a dotted line during working. On the other hand, MnS with a low m.p. is nearly spherodized around the rate earth element sulfide as a nuclei and uniformly disperseid in the matrix. As a result, the machinability is enhanced, and MnS acts hardly as the starting point of cracking. The S and rare earth element contents are restricted in consideration of hot workability during forging.
