Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform an orientation processing with high resistance to aging and high stability without impairing high reproductivity, by forming an orienting film composed principally of zirconium acetylacetate on a plastic substrate. CONSTITUTION:zirconium acetylacetate (CH3COCHCOCH3)4Zr is dissolved in ethanol, chloroform, tetrahydrofuran, acetonitrile, or the like to give a 0.1-10wt% solution, this solution is coated on a plastic film, such as polyethylene terephthalate, polyethersulfone, or polycarbonate, and dried at 80-150 deg.C to form a film. This film is rubbed with cotton cloth under 20-200g/cm<2> static pressure to obtain an orienting film. Use of such a plastic film permits this device obtained to be strong against impact, light in weight, and small in size. As its coating method, a simple method, such as scattering, spraying, or dipping of the film is adopted.
