PURPOSE:To make automation of the manufacturing process easy and to stabilize the orientation of a liquid crystal by providing a coating film, made of a solid solution of Si and Ti, to surfaces of two substrates, retaining the nematic liquid crystal between the both, in contact with the liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:In the liquid-crystal device provided with nematic liquid crystal 4 retained between two counter substrates 1 and 1, a mixture of organic silicide and an organic titanium compound in an organic solvent is baked to form thin films 2 and 2 of SixTi1-xO2 on surfaces of substrates 1 and 1 in contact with liquid crystal 4. Said coatings 2 and 2 are preferably of <=20-200Angstrom in thickness and oriented by rubbing, etc. Then, (x) of each coating is preferably 0.1<x<0.5; when x<0.1, damp resistance deteriorates and when x>0.5, orientation gets unstable.
