Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain vertically oriented films which are superior in coating property and do not degrade despite heating in cell assembling processes by coating a soln. consisting of a mixture of specific alkylalkoxysilanes and alcoholates of specific metals on the opposite surfaces of a pair of substrates of a liquid crystal display device and subjecting the same to heat treatment. CONSTITUTION:An org. solvent soln. compounded with a mixture of one or more kinds of the alkylalkoxysilanes expressed by the formulas I-VI (l=1-10, m= 4-24, n=10-26, R is alkyl of <=C10) and one or more kinds of metallic alcholates expressed by the formula V (Me is Ge, Ti, Zr, R is the same as that mentioned above, k=1-30) in an Me/Si=0.1-8 (atom ratio) range is prepd. This soln. is coated on the opposite surfaces of a pair of liquid crystal substrates and the solvent is allowed to evaporate at 100-250 deg.C to carry out crosslinking reaction, whereby the vertically oriented films are obtained. These oriented films have excellent orientation characteristics for various kinds of liquid crystals, and have good heat resistance, and the display device of good durability giving superior display quality is obtained.
