Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve contrast ratio by inserting a thin film consisting of an org. or inorg. material in a cell to separate a liquid crystal cell chamber into two layers, upper and lower, using liquid crystal materials including dichromatic dyes of the same color or different colors for these two layers and horizontally orienting the liquid crystals of the two upper and lower layers in different directions. CONSTITUTION:After adhesives 13 such as epoxy adhesive are printed on both of upper and lower glass plates 12 in a frame form, a separator thin film 16 is superposed on one glass plate with application of tension, after which the other glass plate is superposed. Then, the adhesives are set at a high temp. to form an empty cell without contg. liquid crystals, and the cell is hermetically sealed by adhesives through liquid crystal injection holes 17. Incident light 18 is natural light vibrating in all directions. In the nonlighted parts, dichromatic dyes 11 are horizontally oriented in an X-axis direction in the upper layer and therefore the polarized light of the incident light 18 in an X-axis direction is absorbed. Therefore, the remaining polarized light 19 in a Y-axis direction enters the lower layer. In the lower layer, the dichromatic dyes 11 are horizontally oriented in the Y-axis direction and therefore the polarized light in the Y-axis direction is absorbed and the incident light 19 is absorbed. In this way, a contrast ratio is improved.
