Abstract
PURPOSE:To automate the start of melting and to make the characteristics after melting uniform by monitoring the optical output inputted from one optical fiber and outputted to another fiber in case of molten connection of the optical fibers arranged on a straight line. CONSTITUTION:In case of molten connection of optical fibers 14, 24 arranged on a straight line in V-shape grooves 12 and 22, the interval between these fibers before melting, for example <=0.4mm., is found from a test so that the connection loss after melting is included within an allowable value. Then light is made incident from one end of the fiber 14 and emitted from the fiber 24 and these fibers 14 and 24 are allowed to approach at a constant speed; at the time, the coefficient of variation on emitted light strength is fixed in correspondence with the interval between these fibers, 0.04mm.. The fibers 14 and 24 are sampled on the basis of the strength of outputted light and set up automatically so that melting is started when the prescribed variation of strength is obtained. Since the coefficient of variation on the strength of emitted light is used, uniform adhesive characteristics can be obtained even if the length of fibers is changed.
