Abstract

PURPOSE:To make possible the connection of optical fibers of low losses by forming one end face of the two optical fibers to be connected to a convex circular cone, forming the end face of the other fiber to a concave circular cone of an equal or slightly larger vertical angle, butting both faces and melt-sticking the same. CONSTITUTION:The end face of one 11 of two optical fibers 11, 11' consisting of clads 12, 12' and cores 13, 13' is formed to a convex circular cone 24, and the end face of the other 11' is formed to a concave circular cone 25 of an (equal or) slightly larger vertical angle. If both faces 24 and 25 are butted and heated, melt- sticking begins from the core, and along with the progression of melt sticking, the optical fibers are pressed to themselves, whereby the melt sticking is perfected. Since the melt sticking begins from a part, the remaining of air bubbles is prevented and since optical axes may be aligned, the connection with low losses may be accomplished.
