Abstract

PURPOSE:To change the light passage of light transmitted through an optical fiber by arranging a transparent tube to accommodate mercury and so on in the passage and moving the position of mercury. CONSTITUTION:A transparent glass tube 7 whose sections are rectangules is arranged in the light passage of optical fibers 1 and 2 so that the parallel sides of a section are inclined to the light passage with some angle of inclination. Mercury 8 is accommodated in the tube 7 so as to move the liquid surface of the mercury 8 vertically. When the liquid surface of the mercury 8 is lower than the light passage, the light from the fiber 1 is converted into parallel rays after passing through a lens 4, focused by a lens 5 after passing through the tube 7 and penetrated into the optical fiber 2. When the liquid surface of the mercury 8 rises, the rays of light from the optical fiber 1 are reflected on the mercury 8 with a high reflection factor, focused by a lens 6 and penetrated into an optical fiber 3. Thus, the passage of light can be changed by shifting the liquid surface of mercury 8 vertically.
