Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the apparent specific gravity difference from the contained foreign substance accelerate floating and remove the foreign substance by applying the downward electromagnetic force equal to the gravity of molten steel to the molten metal in a vessel. CONSTITUTION:Electric current is flowed from an electric power source 9 to acoil 8, and with end parts 7-1, 7-2 of a magnet as magnetic poles, a magnetic field is formed in a direction from A' to A in a mold 11. An electric power source 10 is connected to plates B, B', and face electric current is flowed in a direction from the plate B to B' in the molten steel in the mold. Then, the molten steel in the mold is applied with vertically downward Lorentz force by the mutual effect of the magnetic field and the electric current. On the other hand, the contained foreign substance interposed in the molten steel is not applied with the vertical downward Lorentz force because their electric conductivity is extremely small. Hence, the Lorentz force makes the molten steel equal to the one of which the specific gravity is doubled by being applied with the force equal to gravity and this increases the apparent specific gravity difference from the foreign substance, thereby accelerating the floating of the inclusions.
