Abstract
PURPOSE:To make a distionary simple and to obtain a character reader operating stably in a high speed by dividing an inner part of a character frame of a subpattern extracted from a character pattern into a prescribed area, by taking a position change of a character line, etc into consideration. CONSTITUTION:An optical signal input 1 is converted to a binary quantized electric signal in a photoelectric converting part 2 and is accomodated in a pattern register 3. Further simultaneously a line width of an input pattern is calculated in a line width calculating part 4, and the calculated result of the line width is added to extracting parts 6, 7 of a vertical and a horizontal subpattern to which a signal from the register 3 is inputted. Still more the horizontal and vertical subpatterns extracted from the extracting parts 6, 7 is added to a character frame devision determining part 10 that inputs an output from a character frame detecting part 5. An output of right and left inclined subpattern extracting parts 8, 9 and an output from a computer part 4 along with an output of the extracting parts 6, 7 and an output from a determining part 10 are added to a characteristic matrix extracting part 11. Thus, when a subpattern is divided into a prescribed area within a character frame, it is divided by taking a position variation of a character line, and further constitution of a dictionary becomes simple.
