Abstract

PURPOSE:To recognize a character with high accuracy, by deriving the quantity regarding the number of each different direction strokes of a character pattern, and its length and position, and using it as a feature quantity. CONSTITUTION:A document, etc. are read by each picture element unit by a scanner 100, and are sent to a quantizer 102 as an analog picture element density signal. The inputted picture element density signal is binary-coded by the quantizer 102 and is sent to a preprocessing circuit 104. To a picture data whose smoothing processing has ended, both extraction of a stroke of a character pattern and extraction of the quantity of a feature are executed by a processing circuit 106. A pattern matching circuit 110 executes pattern matching by use of the feature quantity of an already known character read out from a dictionary registered in a file device 108, and the feature quantity of the character pattern provided from the processing circuit 106, and outputs the most similar dictionary code.
