Abstract

PURPOSE:To recognize surely a frame surrounded by an interrupted line such as a broken line, a hand-written frame indicated by a curved frame line, etc., by recognizing a rectangular region, which is surrounded with a pair of lateral frame line candidcates and a pair of longitudinal frame line candidates, as the region of the frame and obtaining addresses of apexes. CONSTITUTION:Upper boundary picture elements of black runs in the lateral direction are linked in the lareral direcion to extract a lateral segment in a segment extracting part 12, and left boundary picture elements of balck runs in the longitudinal direction are linked in the longitudinal direction to extract a longitudinal segment in a segment extracting part 16. Only sgements pertinent to a continuous line or an interrupted line as a frame line out of extracted lateral and longitudinal segments are selected as effective segments (in segment selecting parts) 13, 17. Effective lateral segments whose ends are close to each other are linked mutually in a linking part 14 to obtain lateral frame line candidates, and efffective longitudinal segments whose ends are close to each other are linked mutually in a linking part 18 to obtain longitudinal frame line candidates. The region surrounded with a pair of lateral frame line candidates and a pair of longitudinal frame line candidates having a specific positional relation to this pair of effective lateral segments is recognized as a region of the frame in a frame recognizing part 19.
