Abstract
PURPOSE: To enhance the heating efficiency of a preheating furnace and the reducing efficiency of a melting furnace by coating the surface of electrolytic copper with a black reducing agent before charging the copper into the preheating furnace.
CONSTITUTION: A reducing agent coater 8 is set in the vicinity of the inlet of a preheating furnace 3 to coat the surface of electrolytic copper 2 charged into the furnace 3 with a black reducing agent 9 such as powder of charcoal, coke or graphite. Thus, the radiant heat absorbing efficiency of the copper 2 is enhanced, and the whole heating efficiency of the furnace 3 is also enhanced. When the copper 2 is put into a melting furnace 4 in succession, the reducing agent 9 forms a reducing atmosphere in the furnace 4. The agent 9 is not easily eliminated from the surface of the copper 2 in molten metal 5 and is directly fed to a deep part of the metal 5, where it reduces the metal 5.
