Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable the use of Ni-contg. steel with superior heat resistance as the material of an outer case in the heating furnace of an apparatus for manufacturing metallic Ti by the Kroll process by installing a sleeve made of material not alloying with molten Mg at the inside of the case.
CONSTITUTION: A sleeve 7 made of carbon steel or Cr steel undergoing no erosion by reaction with molten metallic Mg is installed at the inside of an outer case 6 in the heating furnace 12 of a Krool process manufacturing apparatus for manufacturing metallic Ti by reducing TiCl4 with metallic Mg. Molten metallic Mg held in the sleeve 7 is reacted with TiCl4 dropped from a pipe 8 to reduce the TiCl4 to Ti with the Mg. The space between the sleeve 7 and the case 6 is filled with MgCl2. Since molten Mg does not contact with the case 6 directly, Ni-contg. steel which reacts with Mg easily but has superior heat resistance can be used as the material of the case, and the thickness of the case 6 can be made smaller. Thus, the apparatus can be extended in size as a whole.
