Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the quantity of feeding head and prevent the formation of shrinkage cavities by making combination use of exothermic heat insulating materials and adiabatic heat insulating materials as heat insulating method for feeding head.
CONSTITUTION: In a method of casting a cast steel casting by using a sand mold having a feeding head part, a low calory heat insulating material or an adiabatic heat insulating material is sprayed onto the feeding head as the 1st insulating material after charging of a melt into the mold. For example, org. inflammable materials such as chaff, straw scraps or the like are used as the low calory heat insulating material. Heat insulating materials of alumina type or ceramic type are used as the adiabatic heat insulating material. Thence, the combustion residues of the 1st heat insulating material are scraped out and removed, after which an exothermic heat material is sprayed as the 2nd heat insulating material. Thermit type heat insulating materials are preferable as this heat insulating material. After the spraying of said heat insulating material, an adiabatic heat insulating material of alumina type or ceramic type is added on this as the 3rd heat insulating material.
