PURPOSE:To permit injection of much charge despite low voltage by adding a small amt. of sulfuric acid in an electrolyte using propylene carbonate. CONSTITUTION:In an electrochemical cell using films of transition metal compds. such as WO3 as electrochromic display materials, an electrolyte prepd. by using propylene carbonate as a solvent and dissolving lithium perchlorate at 1 mol/l concn. in the propylene carbonate is used and sulfuric acid is added at 0.04-0.06 mol/l concn. in said electrolyte. Transparent electroces 2 are patterned on glass 1, and a WO3 film is vapor deposited, whereby display electrodes are formed. Recessed glass 4 provided with a vapor deposited film 5 of Cr-Au is used as lower glass, and a white background plate 7 is sandwiched between the upper and lower glasses, whereby the panel is obtained. Thereafter, the above-mentioned electrolyte is vacuum-injected into the panel.
