Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the color shading or the variance of response speed, by increasing the concentration of an ion which is used for the coloring and is contained in an EC material provided on the counter electrode of an electrochromic (EC) display cell or the concentration of an element that can grow an ion as the distance to the counter electrode is decreased. CONSTITUTION:A display electrode 3 and a counter electrode 4 are provided on upper and lower substate 1 and 2 of an EC display cell, and EC coloring layers 5 and 6 are provided on the electrodes 3 and 4, respectively. Then a white aluminum porous ceramic layer 8 is inserted between the layers 5 and 6, and the electrolyte 7 is enclosed. For such display cell, both Li and WO3 are concurrently formed by vapor deposition so that the concentration of an ion (Li ion) which is used to cause the coloring in an EC coloring layer 6 is set at a low level at the side of the electrolyte 7 and at a high level toward the electrode 4. Thus a display cell which is stable for a long period of time is obtained with the reduced variance of the speed and display plus the coloring/decoloring response properties equal to the application voltage of 2V at all times.
