Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce the EC display body which can be used for watches, electronic calculators, etc. by performing continuous sweeping of the specific lower limit potential and upper limit potential for noble metal electrodes of Ir, etc. thereby forming electrochromic (DC) electrodes.
CONSTITUTION: In the production of the EC display body using the color change of electrodes owing to the electrochemical oxidation reduction reaction of noble metal electrodes of Ir, Ru, Pt, Pd, Os, etc., the noble metal electrodes are formed by the continuous sweeping of the lower potential +0.4V (vs.RHE) or less and upper potential +1.0W1.70V (vs.RHE). For example, Ir is coated through vacuum deposition on the Sn NESA of 4-digit 7-segment system on a glass substrate and is subjected to triangular wave continuous sweeping 100,000 times at Vmax. 1.5V, Vmin 50mV and speed 10V/sec. in a 1N sulfuric acid solution, so that the Ir face is turned to a black color film. Cells are assembled by using the electrodes thus obtained and using a platimum-coated glass substrate for the counter electrode. The electrolyte of glycerol and H2SO4 is filled between the cells and between the both electrodes are driven by square waves of 0.5V, whereby the display in which Ir electrodes become transparent in cathode process and beome black in anode process is obtained.
