Abstract

PURPOSE: A novel compound consisting of a compound oxide of Lu, Ga and Co, expressed by LuGaGoO4, and having the hexagonal layered structure.
CONSTITUTION: Lu, Lu2O3 or a compound decomposable into Lu2O3 by heating is mixed with Ga, Ga2O3 or a compound decomposable into Ga2O3 by heating and Co, CoO or a compound decomposable into CoO by heating. The respective particle diameters thereof are preferably ≤10μm. The atomic ratio of Lu/Ga/Co is 1:1:1. The mixed powder is then heated at 1,100°C or above in the air, an oxidizing atmosphere or such a reducing atmosphere as not to reduce Ga and Co from the trivalent and bivalent ionic states. After the completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture is quenched to 0°C or taken out to the air and give the aimed LuGaCoO4 compound. The resultant compound assumes a black color, and is found to have the same crystal structure as the well-known YFe2O4 by the powder X-ray diffractometry.
