Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a compound having a hexagonal system laminar structure represented by LuFeCuO4 by mixing Lu, Fe and Cu or oxides thereof in a specified atomic ratio and heating the mixture at a proper temp. in a specified atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: Lu, Lu2O3 or a compound decomposable into Lu2O3 by heating is mixed with Fe, Fe2O3 or a compound decomposable into Fe2O3 by heating and Cu, CuO or a compound forming CuO by heating in the form of powder so as to make the atomic ratio among Lu, Fe and Cu 1:1:1. This mixture is heated at ≥800°C in the air, an oxidizing atmosphere or a reducing atmosphere to such a degree that Fe and Cu are not reduced from the tervalent ionic state and the bivalent ionic state, respectively, and after finishing the reaction, the reaction product is rapidly cooled. By this method a black LuFeCuO4 compound having a hexagonal system laminar structure is obtd. This compound is useful as a magnetic material, a semiconductor material and a catalyst.
