Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a compound with a hexagonal system laminar structure represented by YbGaMgO4 by mixing Yb, Ga and Mg or oxides thereof in a specified atomic ratio and heating the mixture at a proper temp. in a specified atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: Yb, Yb2O3 or a compound decomposable into Yb2O3 by heating is mixed with Ga, Ga2O3 or a compound decomposable into Ga2O3 by heating and Mg, MgO or a compound forming MgO by heating in the form of powders so as to make the atomic ratio among Yb, Ga and Mg 1:1:1. This mixture is heated at ≥1,200°C in the air, an oxidizing atmosphere or a reducing atmosphere to such a degree that Ga and Mg are not reduced from the tervalent ionic state and the bivalent ionic state, respectively, and after finishing the reaction, the reaction product is rapidly cooled. By this method a white YbGaMgO4 compound with a hexagonal system laminar structure is obtd. This compound is useful as an optical material, a semiconductor material and a catalyst.
