Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain iron powder containing copper with specified iron and copper mixing rate and green density excelling in various characteristics such as sintering density and hardness important for powder metallurgy, by uniformly mixing the iron powder and copper compound powder, and heat-treating under reducing atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: Iron powder for powder metallurgy is uniformly mixed with one kind or more than two kinds of copper powder of about 15 to 30μ made from copper oxide, copper hydroxide, etc., and the mixture is heat-treated for 20W60 minutes at about 900W1000°C under reducing atmosphere of H2 gas or the like, and is crushed to 80-mesh or smaller size. Thus obtained iron powder containing copper has the iron-copper mix rate, which indicates the rate of copper amount bonded with iron powder, of more than 95wt%, and the green density equal or superior to that of the mixed powder simply mixing the iron powder and copper powder at the same copper content, and excels in the characteristics from the viewpoint of powder metallurgy such as product sintering density, moldings dimensional variation, and radial crushing strength constant. Besides, chlorine may be contained in said copper powder by about 0.1% (as hydrochloric acid).
