Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare LuGaCuO4 having the hexagonal layered structure, by mixing metallic lutecium with metallic gallium and copper at a specific ratio, and heating the resultant mixture under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: Lu, Lu2O3 or a compound decomposable into Lu2O3 by heating is mixed with Ga, Ga2O3 or a compound decomposable into Ga2O3 by heating and copper, CuO or a compound decomposable into CuO by heating at an atomic ratio of Lu/Ga/Cu of 1:1:1. The resultant mixture is then heated at 700°C or above in the air, an oxidizing atmosphere or such a reducing atmosphere as not to reduce the Ga and copper from the trivalent and bivalent ionic states. The particle diameters of the starting materials are preferably about 10μm. The higher the purity, the better. The heating time is about one day or longer. After the completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture is quenched to 0°C, to give a black platy crystal.
