Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare TmGaCuO4, by mixing metallic thulium with metallic gallium and copper at a specific ratio, and heating the resultant mixture under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: Tm, Tm2O3 or a compound decomposale into Tm2O3 by heating is mixed with Ga, Ga2O3 or a compound decomposable into Ga2O3 by heating and copper, CuO or a compound decomposable into CuO by heating at an atomic ratio of Tm/Ga/Cu of 1:1:1. The resultant mixture is then heated at 700°C or above in the air, an oxidizing atmosphere or such a reducing atmosphere as not to reduce Ga and copper from the trivalent and bivalent ionic states. The particle diameters of the starting materials are preferably ≤ about 10μm. The higher the purity, the better. The heating time is about one day or longer. After the completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture is quenched to 0°C to give a black platy crystal.
