Abstract

PURPOSE: A novel compound consisting of a compound oxide of Tm, Ga and Co, expressed by TmGaCoO4, and having the hexagonal layered structure.
CONSTITUTION: Tm, Tm2O3 or a compound decomposable into Tm2O3 by heating is mixed with Ga, Ga2O3 or a compound decomposable into Ga2O3 by heating and Co, CoO or a compound decomposable into CoO by heating. The respective particle diameters thereof are preferably ≤about 10μm. The atomic ratio of Tm/Ga/Co is 1:1:1. The resultant mixture is then heated at 1,000°C or above in the air, an oxidizing atmosphere or such a reducing atmosphere as not to reduce Ga and Co from the trivalent and bivalent ionic states. After the completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture is guenched to 0°C or quickly taken out to the air and give the aimed LuGaCoO4 compound. The compound assumes a black color and is found to have the crystal structure by the powder X-ray diffractometry and the same type as the well-known YFe2O4.
