Abstract

PURPOSE: A novel fluorescent substance, containing a trivalent europium ion as an activator partially substituting the yttrium, having a specific composition, and capable of emitting red color under irradiation with electron rays, ultraviolet rays, etc.
CONSTITUTION: A fluorescent substance, expressed by the composition formula 9Y2O3.4WO3:Eu3+, in which Y is substituted by 2W20 atomic %, based on Y, trivalent europium. For synthesizing the fluorescent substance, yttrium oxide, ammonium paratungstate and europium oxide as raw materials are fully mixed by the dry mixing method, and the resultant mixture is then calcined in an oxidizing atmosphere, preferably air atmosphere, in a calcining furnace at 1,200W1,600°C for 1W15hr.
