Abstract
A phosphor material is characterized by the empirical formula M1(2-x)M11xO2Ch where M1 is at least one of La and Lu, M11 is one of Dy, Er, Eu, Ho, Nd, Pr, Sm, Tb and Tm, O is oxygen, Ch is at least one of S, Se and Te, and x is between 0.0002 and 0.2. In preparation, preferably oxalates are coprecipitated from a nitrate solution of M1 and M11 with oxalic acid, converted to a mixed oxide by heating in air at 600 DEG to 1300 DEG C. for 0.2 to 4 hours, the mixed oxide then heated in H2Ch at 900 DEG to 1300 DEG C. for 0.2 to 2 hrs. The phosphor may also be prepared by firing a mixture of oxalates in H2S, or a mixture of sulphates in H2, or a mixture of oxides in C2S, or a mixture of sulphides and oxides, or oxalates, or sulphates in N2 or H2, or a mixture of sulphates in H2S or C2S, or a substantially stoichiometric mixture of oxides and sulphides in a neutral or reducing atmosphere, in all cases at 900 DEG to 1300 DEG C. for 0.2 to 2.0 hours. Red emitting phosphors such as La1.90, Eu0.10, O2S and Lu1.98, Sm0.02, O2S and green phosphors such as La1.97Tb0.03O2S may be used in cathode-ray tubes. Other phosphors mentioned are La1.94Eu0.06O2S, La1.94Sm0.06O2, La1.96Pro0.04 O2S, La1.98Tb0.02O2S, La1.90Nd0.10O2S, Lu1.94Tb0.06O2S with principal peaks at 6260<\>rA 6075<\>rA, 5100<\>rA, 5460<\>rA, 9000<\>rA, and 4590<\>rA respectively, minor peaks also being disclosed, and all being both photo- and cathodoluminescent.
