Abstract

1453991 Luminescent materials and uses thereof PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 7 March 1974 [14 March 1973] 10269/74 Heading C4S A Tb activated phosphor is of formula M 3 Ln 2-x Tb x (BO 3 ) 4 where M is at least one of Ca, Sr or Ba, Ln is at least one of Y, La, Gd, Lu, Yb and Dy and in which 0À01#x#1À50. The phosphor may be used in a screen, e.g. with other luminescent materials as a green component in low p Hg lamps, or in such lamps for xerographic photocopy equipment, or in low p Cd lamps (e.g. 230 to 330 nm. radiation). Excitation may be electrons, X-rays or ultra-violet. The compounds have isomorphic crystal structure with orthorhombic symmetry. The borates are preferably prepared by a solid state reaction, starting materials being given, and involving heating between 800‹ C. and the melting point. Multistage heating is preferred, e.g. preheating at 600-800‹ C., then one or more treatments at 800-1,200‹ C. in a weakly reducing atmosphere. Detailed preparations are given, as well as twenty-nine specific phosphor compositions. Operation may be at >500‹ C. the Table lists various properties.
