Abstract

PURPOSE: A novel fluorescent substance that contains Y, Ge, and Eu in a specific proportion, further including Eu3+ that replaces a part of Y, as an activator, thus emitting a red color when irradiated with electron rays or ultraviolet ones.
CONSTITUTION: The fluorescent substance is expressed by the formula: Y2O3.GeO2: Eu3+, in which the Eu trivalent ions replace the Y by 1W15atom%. In the production, for example, dried Y2O3 and GeO2 are thoroughly mixed or a coprecipitate is obtained as oxalate salts from the aqueous solution of chlorides of Y, Ge and Eu. Then, the mixture or the coprecipitate is calcined in a furnace of oxidative atmosphere, preferably in the air, at 1,100W1,500°C for 1W10hr.
