Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare LuGaMnO4 having the hexagonal layered structure, by mixing lutecium oxide with manganese oxide and gallium oxide at a specific ratio, and heating the resultant mixture under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: Lu2O3 is mixed with MnO and Ga2O3 at a molar ratio of about 1:2:1, and the resultant mixture is then heated at 900°C or above in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. The particle diameter of Lu2O3 is preferably ≤ about 10μm, and the purity is preferably high. Lu2O3 is preferably prepared by calcining at about 1,000°C for several hours in air. MnO has a particle diameter preferably ≤ about 10μm, and prepared by calcining in a mixed gas of gaseous carbon dioxide with hydrogen at about 1,000°C for about one day, and quenching the calcined material at 0°C. Ga2O3 has a particle diameter preferably ≤ about 10μm, and is prepared by calcining at about 800°C in air for about one day. The heating time is about 10min or longer. After the completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture is quenched to 0°C to give a platy crystal having the metallic black gloss.
