Abstract

PURPOSE: To coat glass which is difficult to exfoliate despite receiving of heat cycles on the surface of a metallic object without cracks and pinholes by coating a liquid org. silicon compd. on said surface and heating the same in an atmosphere contg. an alkali metal compd.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid org. silicon compd. such as silicon ethoxide is coated on the surface of a metallic object such as pipe cooler. This is heated to about ≥800°C in an atmosphere of a glass melting furnace or the like contg. an alkali metallic compd. such as Na2O. By this method, the cracks and pinholes of an SiO2 film formed by the decomposition of org. silicon compd. are sealed. The surface layer part of the glass lining layer obtd. by this method is a dense glass layer contg. a large amt. of alkali metal and the surface layer part of the metallic object is a porous SiO2 layer of less alkali metal, thereby isolating the metal and corrosive atmospheres perfectly. Since the SiO2 film has a cushion effect, the glass layer does not exfoliate despite receiving of heat cycles.
