Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the deterioration of the activity of a catalyst with time and reduce the corrosion of an apparatus in obtaining the titled substance from acetic acid and an aliphatic lower olefin, by carrying out the reaction in the presence of an aromatic disulfonic acid or an ester thereof as a catalyst and steam.
CONSTITUTION: Acetic acid is reacted with an aliphatic lower olefin, preferably ≤4C, to give an acetic ester, preferably ethyl acetate. In the process, the reaction is carried out in the presence of a solid catalyst containing an aromatic disulfonic acid, e.g. benzenedisulfonic acid or nephthalenedisulfonic acid, and/or an ester thereof supported on a carrier and steam. The feed rate of the steam is 0.5W15wt%, preferably 0.5W10wt%, based on the charged acetic acid. The effect of the present acetic acid is not remarkable in catalysts other than described above, and in some cases the activity is inhibited. The carrier is preferably silica having a specific surface area of 100W300m2/g and an alumina content ≤5wt%.
