Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a higher (meth)acrylate with the suppressed formation of by- products without requiring the removal of a very small amount of water from the reaction system, by carrying out the ester interchange reaction of a lower alkyl ester of (meth)acrylic acid in the presence of a throrium compound as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A lower alkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid is subjected to the ester interchange reaction with a higher alcohol expressed by the formula ROH (R is 3W20C alkyl or cycloalkyl) or formula R1R2N(CH2)nOH (R1 and R2 are 1W12C alkyl; n is an integer 2W6) or polyhydric alcohol, e.g. glycol or triol, to prepare a higher (meth)acrylate. In the process, a thorium compound, most preferably thorium acetylacetonate, is used as a catalyst in an amount of 0.02W 10mol% based on the raw material alcohol, and the reaction is carried out at 70W130°C.
