Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound in high purity at a low cost from methyl methacrylate and an alcohol, by using an inexpensive and easily handleable alkali metallic salt of a weak inorganic acid having a high catalytic activity with slight side reactions as an ester interchange catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Methyl methacrylate is subjected to the ester interchange with an alcohol, e.g. n-butyl alcohol, of the formula R-OH (R is 2W22C alkyl) in the presence of an ester interchange catalyst to give a methacrylic ester of the formula CH2=C(CH3)COOR. In the process, an alkali metallic salt of a weak inorganic acid, preferably carbonate or bicarbonate of potassium, rubidium or cesium, is used as the ester interchange catalyst. The ester interchange reaction is advanced preferably by adding the alkali metallic salt of the weak inorganic acid substantially dissolved in methanol in portions to the ester interchange reaction system consisting of the methyl methacrylate and the alcohol of the formula R-OH.
