Abstract
PURPOSE: To carry out the hydration reaction with a high catalytic activity for a long time without dissolution of the catalytic components to the reaction system in hydrating an olefin to give an alcohol, by using a catalyst containing a carrier supporting a heteropoly-acid on active carbon as catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An olefin is hydrated in the presence of a catalyst containing a carrier in which a heteropoly-acid, e.g. 12-molybdophosphoric acid, 12-tungstosilicic acid or 12-tungstoboric acid, and a salt thereof, e.g. a metallic salt of a metal selected from groupsI, II, III, VIII, etc. in the periodic table supported on active carbon to give an alcohol. The heteroply-acid or salt thereof supported on the active carbon is used in an amount in the range of 5W20wt%, preferably 10W15wt%. The catalyst is prepared by adding a given amount of active carbon to a solution of the heteropoly-acid, stirring the mixture for a given time thoroughly, adsorbing the heteropoly-acid in the active carbon, filtering off the active carbon, washing the active carbon until the elution of the heteropoly-acid is not observed, and drying the washed active carbon if necessary.
