Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound efficiently and advantageously, by reacting an olefin with oxygen or a gas containing oxygen in the presence of water and a catalyst containing a rhodium salt supported on a carrier containing silica or/and alumina having a specific surface area.
CONSTITUTION: An olefin is reacted with oxygen or a gas containing oxygen and water in the presence of a catalyst containing a rhodium salt supported on a carrier containing silica, alumina or silica -alumina having a surface area ≥ 30m2/g, preferably ≥50m2/g, in the presence of water, preferably steam, in the vapor phase to give a carbonyl compound efficiently without requiring a reoxidizing agent. According to the method, methyl ethyl ketone can be effectively prepared from an olefin having a low reactivity, e.g. butene, without corrosion by chlorides, and this method is industrially advantageous with the strength and stability of the catalyst.
